WE ARE THE OFF-COURSE GOLFERS ASSOC.

Today, we are a group of almostGolf ball evangelists who've been hitting and playing golf through our neighborhoods, parks, and school yards since 2003 when the ball was invented. Our team includes teaching pros, marketing and advertising executives, golf coaches, teachers, as well as the 'the guy and gal next door'. Many of our teaching pros/event producers are the ones responsible for pioneering 'in school' golf programs in over 25,000 primary and secondary schools across the U.S. and in Europe, using the almostGolf ball. Our goal at the OCGA is push the envelope of Off-Course Golf, UrbanGolf, CrossGolf and StreetGolf by organizing events and fundraisers that truly take golf 'to infinity and beyond'. <<read more>>

As one fine fellow once said, "Once you leave the golf course, this goes as far as your brain can think." It's become clear that he is right and the only limitations any of us have when it comes to event and course format and design is our own creativity. Basically, because we can now use tens of thousands of new venues, anyone can become a course designer. That's the idea. To 'Open Source' golf and make it fun and affordable for everyone.

The Founder/Commissioner/Grand Puba:  In 2003, after 72 protyping sessions and great personal expense, Robert Peterson successfully invented the almostGolf ball.  He has expanded this business to 3,500 retail outlets and over 25,000 schools that teach golf on campus.  Most of these schools had no on-campus golf programs prior to the invention of the almostGolf ball.  Following this in 2008, Rob began to pursue creating 'the sport' of Off-Course Golf on a national level.  His original intention after all, was to create a golf game that could be played anywhere and at any time, freeing the sport from the confines of traditional golf courses.  He sees golf courses...everywhere.

It's a huge world out there, with a millions places to play and a million ways to do it. And we want to help everyone to be successful in their events.

The Peterson Family Story, How almostGolf began:   In 2001, the Peterson brothers Thomas and Robert, with the assistance of wife Gwen Abel, produced the first 'Off-Course' golf event. It was a tournament through the campus of Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in Los Angeles, CA.   After two years, and a large investment from Thomas, the trio worked through 72 golf ball prototyping sessions before starting almostGolf in 2003.  The Durkin Group out of New Jersey came on board in 2004 to advance funding and keep the almostGolf ball brand alive and growing.

To date the ball is in 3,500 retail outlets and over 25,000 schools.  Before the invention of the ball, there were virtually no 'in-school' golf programs because of the danger of the traditional golf ball.  At that time, the golf industry had no interest in developing a high performance, practical, and safe ball. Today thanks to the almostGolf ball, schools, clubs, and individuals can safely practice or play Off Course.  This ball has literally changed the game of golf forever.

In late 2008, Rob came to the realization that his passion in life was to promote and grow the game of Off-Course golf, it was no longer simply about the ball.  His vision was to create a series of tournaments, painting golf courses, and benefiting charities across the entire country.  As a cinematographer, Rob has been capturing the excitement of this cutting edge sport and is looking forward to creating videos that will take the sport of Off Course golf to another level.  “Honestly, doing events is what spins my wheels” said Peterson.

The Future of the OCGA:  In three years, the LMU Open, hosted by Tri Delta, grew from 40 players to over 300.  Our goal is to help many more organizations, clubs, charities and corporations create their own events that will grow in the same manner.   As of January 2010, golf tournaments are being organized in several cities around the country and in Europe.  Peterson said, "Simply put, Gwen and I would like nothing more than to meet you at an Off Course golf event...everywhere!"
